Pakistan can’t afford political instability right now: Fazl

In the wake of calls for resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over the damning report of the Joint Investigation Team, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of his eponymous faction of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, said on Saturday that Pakistan could not afford political instability at this juncture.

“Those calling for the prime minister’s resignation are only interested in destabilising the country, especially at a time when the country is economically doing well,” the politico-religious leader told reporters in Karachi, according to Radio Pakistan.

“Pakistan and China have transformed their 70-year-long friendship into a strong economic partnership,” the Maulana said.

“But some people are conspiring against the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor by calling for the premier’s resignation,” he added.
