Slovakia’s leader linked to murdered journalist and Italian mafia

The final article by a murdered journalist was published yesterday in Slovakia alleging links between figures close to Robert Fico, the prime minister, and the Italian mafia.

The story appeared on Jan Kuciak’s Aktuality.sk website hours after Mr Fico offered a €1 million reward for information about the killing while standing next to piles of cash on a table.

Mr Fico dismissed any suggestion that two officials were linked to the contract-style killings of Mr Kuciak, 27, and Martina Kusnirova, his girlfriend.

Their bodies were found at their home in Velka Maca, east of the capital, Bratislava, each with single bullet wounds. The killings have shaken the country and led to street protests and allegations of high-level corruption.
