Panama Papers scandal: Pakistan to arrest former PM Nawaz Sharif at airport upon return from London

Islamabad: Pakistan has said that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will be taken into custody upon his return from London on Friday. Caretaker Information Minister Syed Ali Zafar was quoted as saying by Bloomberg that Sharif and his daughter Maryam would be arrested and not allowed to leave the airport.

Sharif is returning to Pakistan from London days after an anti-corruption court convicted him and his daughter in a case related to the Panama Papers scandal. While Sharif was handed a 10-year jail term by the accountability court in the Avenfield properties case, Maryam was jailed for seven years in absentia. The duo is coming back to appeal the conviction and the sentences.

The minister’s remark came on a day when Judge Muhammad Bashir of the Islamabad Accountability Court rejected Sharif’s petition to transfer the remaining two corruption cases against him to another accountability court.
