Islamabad: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were arrested on Friday night, minutes after their plane landed at the Lahore airport. The police arrested the duo and seized their passports, following which the two were flown to Islamabad via a special plane by the officials of National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The two have been arrested in connection with Avenfield Reference case. Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Pakistan’s anti-corruption court NAB in July 2018 in connection with one of the three corruption cases in the infamous Panama Papers scandal. His daughter, Maryam, has also been sentenced to seven years in jail for abetment and non-corporation.
Meanwhile, Nawaz’s son-in-law Safdar has been given a one-year jail term by the Pakistani court for his alleged involvement in the case. Nawaz and Maryam flew from London on Friday, where they were attending to his wife Kulsoom
