Pakistan to hold general election on Wednesday

Voters in Pakistan will cast their ballots on Wednesday in a general election that could lead to a change of government.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption earlier this month. He resigned last year after tax evasion and other allegations surfaced in the massive leak of documents known as the Panama Papers.

An opposition party led by former cricket star Imran Khan is gaining more support with its anti-corruption pledge.

Last year’s national census showed that more than 200 million live in Pakistan. The country is the world’s 6th most populous nation.

Pakistan’s political situation poses a significant impact on its neighbors and the United States’ strategy for Afghanistan.
