‘Nothing to hide’: Charity boss rejects ‘$20m misappropriation’

Over a long career, Roy Bijkerk has boxed professionally, run a car rental chain, invested in property and, at one point, conspired to import cocaine.

He was someone who could both arrange a loan for gambler Edward Hayson and set up a meeting with broadcaster Alan Jones, his evidence in the Federal Court last week suggested.

But when asked for his occupation, Mr Bijkerk said “I think I’m unemployed.”

His income vanished with the collapse of Guardian Youth Care, a children’s home care charity that subcontracted almost all its services to Mr Bijkerk’s for-profit ventures.
